Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
