Administration Announces Government Worker Layoffs as Funding Gap Approaches Third Week
Administration officials confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.
Formal Statement and Initial Details
The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.
While Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.
Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges
Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by the public and pledged to challenge the moves in court.
This is shameful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” stated a national union president, representing the AFGE.
The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Budget Dispute
Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved soon.
During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.
“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Previously, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to block the government from implementing any layoffs during the funding gap. Moreover, a court official directed the government to disclose details on termination strategies, affected agencies, and if any government staff had been recalled to execute staff reductions.
A report argued that a government shutdown limits the ability of the government to carry out firings, referencing official advice that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the shutdown began.
Consequences for Employees
The layoffs occurred on the very day that federal workers got only a incomplete payment for the final days of the previous month but excluding the start of October, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the month.
Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.
This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations running,” Stier stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”
A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid amid the shutdown.
